The Story Behind the Gullah Geechee Diaspora Flag  

The Gullah Geechee Diaspora Flag was born out of a collective desire for representation. In 2020, after the viral success of Geechee Influence’s (formerly Geechee Experience) Geechee 101 video, the community called for a flag that would unite all Gullah Geechee people, no matter where they were in the world. A year later, the flag was unveiled, designed with input from the community and rich with symbolism that reflects our history, values, and aspirations.  

Here’s what the colors and symbols represent:  

Black: Represents the Gullah Geechee Diaspora. We are descendants of West and Central African scientists, engineers, and agriculturalists who were enslaved on coastal plantations in South Carolina

Haint Blue: Symbolizes healing and protection. This sacred color represents Heaven(God) and Mami Wata, a spiritual force that evil spirits (haints and hags) cannot cross. It’s a reminder of our resilience and connection to the Divine Creator. 

Green: Stands for land and Mami Earth, a hidden Gullah Geechee Earth Spirit. As descendants of agricultural scientists, we are natural stewards of the land. Our deep connection to the earth reminds us that we are not just Mother Earth caretakers but also her churn (children)  read more about Mami Earth here 

Gold: Represents the sun, a reminder that we are children of the sun. Our melanated skin is a badge of honor, not shame. We reject antiblackness and colorism by embracing the beauty of our sun-kissed skin.  

Crab Shell: Symbolizes unity. Contrary to the harmful stereotype of “crabs in a barrel,” crabs naturally lift each other up in their estuary habitats. This symbol reminds us to support one another and reject the unnatural behaviors born from systemic oppression and trauma.  (Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome) 

Rice Crop: Honors our ancestors, who were agricultural scientists enslaved for their expertise in rice cultivation. Their knowledge and labor built empires, and we carry their legacy forward.  

Geechee Spear: Represents the Gullah War, a pivotal conflict that played a crucial role in ending race-based chattel slavery in America. This symbol reminds us of our ancestors’ bravery and the power of collective action.  

Inverted Triangle: Signifies self-determination, balance, and harmony. It represents the flow of creative forces from higher realms to the physical world, guiding us to build a future rooted in justice and unity.

Supporting Our Community
